EnerMech has launched an Apprentice of the Year Award in memory of former QHSE manager Malcolm Kennedy.

Malcolm Kennedy was a champion of the mechanical services company’s apprentice scheme and took a strong interest in the welfare of EnerMech’s young employees and trainees.

Sadly Mr Kennedy died following a motorbike accident in June 2010 but his partner Julie Weir attended EnerMech’s Aberdeen headquarters when the inaugural award was presented to third year mechanical apprentice Steven Dey.

Eddie Black and Ian Runcie, lecturers at Banff & Buchan College and who worked closely with Mr Kennedy in supporting the apprentices through the qualification process, also attended the ceremony.

EnerMech managing director, Doug Duguid, paid tribute to the valuable work started by Mr Kennedy. He said: “Malcolm recognised the life blood of any successful company is in the quality of its staff and was a great believer in assisting people of all abilities to fulfil their potential.

“He took a genuine interest in the progress and welfare of our trainees and was a strong advocate of developing an apprentice scheme which would evolve and mature, benefiting the individuals and EnerMech alike.

“Malcolm’s untimely death was a great loss, not only to his family and friends but to his colleagues at EnerMech, and we are pleased Julie could be with us at the inaugural Malcolm Kennedy Apprentice of the Year Award.”

Winner Steven Dey joined EnerMech in June 2009 and was the company’s 48th employee. He is now in the second year of his National Certificate and will go on to achieve an SVQ Level 3.

Stu Massie, a machine shop supervisor and one of the award judges said: “Steven has a serious attitude to work, always asks the right technical questions and is willing to learn and keen to pass on knowledge to those around him. The quality of the other contenders was very high but Steven was judged a deserved winner.”

EnerMech has extended the capability of its Valves Care Division with a number of key appointments and investment in facilities and equipment totalling £3.5 million.

The mechanical engineering specialist is also looking at several potential acquisitions which will enlarge its operational footprint in the Middle East, Asia and Australia.

Bob Stephen has been appointed general manager for EnerMech’s UK valves operations and joins from Wood Group where he was engineering and choke valve manager and had global responsibility for the company’s choke valve product line.

Other appointments include Iain Stewart as production manager and Andrew Whyte as workshop supervisor. Tim Milne has been promoted to the role of international sales manager, while Bruce Campbell , who spent 20 years with valves specialist Score, now heads up EnerMech’s valves business in Australia.

The £3.5 million investment follows the acquisition of Aberdeen Valves Supplied Ltd and subsidiary LG Ball Valves Ltd in December 2010 and includes building a new valve workshop and warehouse at EnerMech’s Aberdeen headquarters. The enlarged premises includes a state-of-the art test bay, featuring a remote access HD system which can be used by clients to watch live testing of valves from any location, facilities for gas, cryongenic and pressure safety valve testing and a large humidity controlled storage area.

In-house design, machining and testing capabilities mean ball valves can be delivered within a 16-18 week window while a Fast Track service can cut delivery times to 6-8 weeks when required.

EnerMech managing director, Doug Duguid, said: “Our Valves Care division will greatly benefit from this significant capital expenditure and the recruitment of high calibre personnel who have a wealth of experience in valve design, production and testing.

“We have a blueprint in place in Aberdeen to provide a level of valve care which is unrivalled in the current marketplace. Our objective is to roll that out to the major oil and gas hubs in which we operate and we will do that by a combination of organic growth and selective acquisitions, and we have identified a number of potential acquisitions which fit this strategy.

“Bob Stephen’s appointment as valves general manger gives us a tried and tested leader whose experience can guide the Valve Care division in to new markets and add considerable growth to our revenues. The other appointments and promotions will ensure the success of our UK valves business is mirrored in international markets.”

EnerMech has secured a multi-million pound crane maintenance contract from Maersk Oil North Sea UK Limited (Maersk Oil) for assets operating in the UK.

The contract covers the inspection, periodic maintenance and engineering support for all deck cranes on-board the Janice FPU, Gryphon and Global Producer III FPSO's managed and operated from Aberdeen.

With an estimated value of up to £3m over the three year (plus two) contract term, EnerMech will deliver a range of technical services through its onshore engineering team, to maintain the assets, deliver major crane upgrades and provide assurance of mechanical integrity.

It is the mechanical engineering company’s first FPSO crane maintenance contract for Maersk Oil.

EnerMech will deploy its newly developed EnerMech LIVE online crane management system to support the Maersk Oil contract. EnerMech LIVE enables clients to view critical documentation, from certificates through to inspection reports, thereby increasing visibility of the vessel’s cranes certification status and regulatory compliance.

EnerMech’s cranes and lifting director, John Morrison, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this major crane contract. Our aim is to not only provide excellent service but to deliver additional value through existing, complimentary contracts already in place.”

Mechanical engineering group, EnerMech, has completed a joint hose management and crane refurbishment contract on the Glas Dowr FPSO in Singapore on behalf of Bluewater Energy Services.

The five month contract covered ongoing hose management, including inspection and replacement of hoses on the topside of the Glas Dowr, which is chartered to Eni for operations in the Kitan Field, located in the Timor Sea approximately 250km south of the Timor-Leste capital of Dili and 500km north of the Australian coast.

The refurbishment of the vessel’s starboard and port cranes and two lifeboat davits on both port and starboard sides completed the workscope.

EnerMech performed the workscope at the Sembawang shipyard and at its recently opened base in Singapore, utilising new in-house hose management facilities, including cutting, crimping and testing equipment.

EnerMech’s regional director for Asia Pacific, John Guy, said: “Our recent investment in new facilities in Singapore and in the latest equipment, such as our in-house hose management suite, allowed us to deliver the fast response and quick mobilisation required by the client.

“We also have a competitive edge in being able to provide multiple service lines which can be integrated in to one contract, in this case for hose management and crane refurbishment services. It is the first time we have worked with Bluewater in Singapore and we hope it will be the start of a long lasting business relationship.”

EnerMech has completed an umbilical flushing and cleaning contract on behalf of Schlumberger in Singapore.

The workscope included hydraulic oil flushing on two 24 core umbilical reels and associated subsea tools.

The work scope included use of EnerMech’s flushing rig and COMPAR Microscope analysis kit to clean the umbilicals and control fluid to a cleanliness Level of AS 4059 E:Class 6 B-F (NAS1638: Class 6).

The umbilicals were also required to be dewatered prior to filling with control fluid HW540 (AS 4059 E:Class 6 B-F (NAS1638: Class 6)). The control fluid was then re-circulated through 3 x 3 micron high pressure filters at high velocities until two consecutive clean (acceptable) samples were achieved.

The work scope was completed within 20 days with more than 143 samples of fluid with cleanliness level of AS 4059 taken by a two man crew. It was EnerMech’s first umbilical project in the region and the ability to offer quick mobilisation and turnaround to complete the work were important factors in winning the contract.
